An enlarged thyroid can be from many causes, including in a worst case scenario, cancer, but thyroid cancer is VERY successfully treated. Please ring your doctor if you are worried about this.
See http://thyroid.about.com/ for more detailed information and an opportunity to ask others who have been in your position about it.

They are going to rule out cancer probably.. I have recently been through this as well as my grandmother.. she almost had to go onto dialysis because of the Para-thyroid which is behind the thyroid and is four little glands then making your thyroid swell. They want to get you fixed now.. thyroid conditions if left untreated are deadly in extreme cases.
They will make sure you do not have cancer and then begin treatment which is what I am on.. Synthroid and I feel so much better like a new person! It is very treatable and you will also feel better.

I have thyroid problems too. They want to rule out cancer. Probably the size difference is because of a growth of some sort, many are nothing to worry about but they wanna be sure. You'll have to be on medication and they will watch the growth to make sure it won't become huge like a goiter.

Thyroid disease is one of the most common health problems we face today. From a practical standpoint, there are many ways to approach this issue. Learn here https://tr.im/Cy1Q9
Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is a very common problem, and there are many reasons for this, including drinking chlorinated and fluoridated water, and eating brominated flour.
Chlorine, fluoride, and bromine are all in the same family as iodine, and can displace iodine in your thyroid gland.
Secondly, many people simply aren't getting enough iodine in their diet to begin with. The amount you get from iodized salt is just barely enough to prevent you from getting a goiter.
