OK, if you want to keep the car, then Old Guy is right! All the chemical "snow" that an extinguisher puts out, is HELL on the engine & electronics/wiring. It's a mess to clean up, and can potentually ruin computer boards & censors on newer models.

The best tool to extinguish a liquid petroleum based fire is foam or make sure their are no combustibles to start a fire . the biggest think to make sure a fire never starts is to keep these liquids in a certified metal container away from any sparks or open flames. In an emergency if you only have a portable fire extinguisher use it,but make sure you also call the F.D.

That is not a true or false answer. It is the fire retardant in the extingusiher that makes it a proper fire extingisher. Call the fire department and ask them if they will give a demo on the proper use of extingushers. I have gone to several classes they have given and just as CPR is important to learn so is the proper use of a fire extingusher. I believe all children in school should be shown and have practice in the use of fire extingushers. Now to answer your question call the fire dept. They are the true experts. Hey that is why you pay taxes. You pay taxes for them to handle these questions. Believe me they will be more then happy to talk to you. That is a very good question to ask !!!!!!

True...but it should be foam.
Dry chem can work well - but as pointed out can create havoc for engine parts - and not to mention cleaning it.
If the fuel is spilt though, dry chem is good - but overall, foam is better. Smothers it more effectively, too - and can be used as a "barrier" around a spill to stop it from flowing further - or at least, some foams can be.
