The section is about religion and spirituality, that doesn't imply people participating have to be religious. You see christian asking about islam even if they do not believe in islam. Atheists have opinions about religions and as far as the topic is religion, it's allowed according to the rules. If I have question about religion in general or any specific religion, or if I feel like giving my point of view about any question relative to religion, the religion section is the place where it must be.

- Atheists don't believe in god or gods, that doesn't mean they don't belong to a religion or aren't religious.
- This is both the religion AND spirituality section. Some people come here to learn about spirituality, but, end up answering questions about religion also.
- Everyone, no matter what their beliefs (or lack of beliefs) are, want their view to be heard.
- Many atheists think religion is dangerous so they are going to let people know that.
- Many atheists think religion is doing the world a big disfavor and they are going to do what they can to change that.
There are many reasons why atheists, agnostics, and other non-believers ask and answer questions in this category. What about believers in god though, why are they here? If they really believed in god, then why wouldn't they ask it directly? It seems to me that they don't actually believe in god, or, they're severely disrespecting it.

It's interesting that when people ask real questions about Christianity, atheists are quite often the only ones who have answers.
I can't count the number of times I've read a question with no thought of answering it until reading the other answers and realizing they didn't answer the question, or were incorrect.
Take for instance the oft repeated lie that Einstein supported creationism. He did not; he was an atheist and did not believe a "creator" created the universe.
But, many times, I have seen the same lie posted that Einstein supported creationism.
Since Christians are clearly so ignorant of that which they attempt to speak, I offer my honest answers to dispel their ignorance.
Why do you have a problem with that? Does the truth bother you?

Dude, you've been around since March. Surely you have seen this question and its explanation about billion times now?
No?
Well, perhaps it's because most of them were religious at one point, and they know about some of the religions here.
Perhaps because their lives are affected EVERY DAY by religious people and the religions of those people.
Perhaps some are here because there are subjects, like evolution, that are often questioned here, and they might just have some intelligent input.
Perhaps it's because they have opinions about religions, and are entitled to voice them.
Perhaps they are here to learn about the society they live in and allow others to learn through them.
There's a whole lot of reasons. Deal with it. Embrace it.

Copied from my blog for this popular question, it's a recurrance.
I, as only one spiritual atheist, am here to learn about the various religions, philosophies and spiritualities of the world. I always held fascination with religions in general (not just christianity---ALL religions, old and new). I do not seek a "god" belief, but here to seek how people attain inner-peace, self-knowledge, inner-wisdom and how they attain peace in their lives in general---and that I might learn a thing or two. :-) I seek to find and improve on my own atheistic spirituality, to improve upon myself. Isn't that what spirituality is basically about? I believe so!
I also hang out here NOT to "defeat religion" but mainly to give the "other side" of the equation, to give information, and to let others know that there are more than one valid way to see, learn and experience the world. R/S section is not "just reserved for the theists". It is reserved for all.

Religion can mean either a persons belief or disbelief in a god or other supernatural power.
Also, you don't have to believe in a god to ask a question about religion. This is the religion and spirituality section, not the Christians only section.

Interesting thought. Most of an atheist's questions are about religion.

I would say because they want to get the attention of those who go to the religion section to answer questions there. Just a guess!

Because a lot of us want to know why anyone would believe in a god. It seems unrealistic to us and we want to know why. You don't have to be religious to have questions about religion.

Beats me. I remember a case when a Cub Scout took his Atheism to court, because he didn't believe in the "Pledge of Allegiance." When the judge awarded him his rights, the first thing the scout said was, "Thank God!"
