I was given a full pack of Heartgard Plus chews for dogs 50-100 lbs. Can I cut these up into halves or thirds and give it to my 7 week old pointer puppy? It seems silly to waste the new pack given me, but he won't reach 50 lbs for quite a while yet. Thanks!

As a licensed vet tech i can tell you unfortunately no it wont work. The pill is meant to be taken in the entirety not split up. They do make it for puppies maybe you could find someone to give it too that has a dog , or if your dogs will be 50 lbs. hold on to it they're good for 2 years.

Why don't you save the big dog pack and go to the vet and they will sell you one pill at a time that is the right size. You really do not need to start it right now anyway. You can wait a month and start and he may be closer to 25 lbs and then you can halve them. I wouldn't cut them any smaller than the half. Ask the vet!! They will not test him, he is to young.

I called the company a couple years ago, because i have dogs the need a whole large and a half. They said I could cut it in half instead of getting 2 sizes, but do not cut it any furthur.
That is what they said....because I think it says in the package insert NOT to cut it. I have been cutting them for years!!

Never treat a puppy with adult medications at a lower dose. And never treat a cat like a small dog when it comes to medications. Always get the correct medication for the correct pet and the correct dose from your veterinarian.

Besides it would be even sillier to have to spend money at the vet's office because you made your puppy sick while trying to save money - right?

My vet told me that the medicine in the pill is not evenly distributed... meaning you could accidently give the whole dose by halving them..... not meaning to i mean if the medicine is all on one side of the pill then when you half it then you could give no dose one month and a overdose the next... that is just what my vet told me.

Do not split up the heartgaurd pills.
My vet would have us bring in the pup and weigh heronce a month and sell us one pill at a time until her weight stabalized.
The pack of pills you hvae will keep until she is ready to take them.
