It is true that neither tanning bed nor sunbathing make your skin younger by exposing it to UV-rays, the two work in different ways. While sun exposure has short-term harmful effects, negative consequences of the tanning booth are long lasting and may appear later.
Obviously sun is more fun, and human body needs sun rays - even tough we humans do not photosynthecise, our body needs sun to produce vitamin D.. But before exposing you skin to the sun dont forget to take a couple of 5 min tanning booth sessions top prepare your skin to insolation. And of course dont leave out the UV screen!

Tanning in natural sunshine, in a secure place, is the lesser of the two evils, you described.

laying out in the sun, with good sun tan lotion to protect your skin. it is more healthy, you get benefits from sun for your bones, hopefully fresh air (depends where you do it), and more relaxing for your mind.. tanning booth is so artificial and a waste of time..

I believe a tan in a booth is good because you have all the accessories you need to not get yourself hurt, such as correct tanning oils, assistants, those funky tiny goggles, and whatnot.

Laying out is probably less bad for you because the uv rays aren't as intense or concentrated. in a booth, it's just you and the uv lamps. outside there are clouds and polution and all sorts of things in the way.

Natural Sunshine bc the tanning beds are concentrated rays (more potent). Good Luck!
