Acceleration is the result of a force acting upon a movable object resulting in the objects movement from static to mobile.
Think of a game of marbles. A static marble sits around quite happily until another marble, travelling a speed, makes contact with the static marble. When this happens some of the kinetic energy of the moving marble is transfered to the static marble causing it to move . The static marble has received a directional force and is accelerated away from it's resting place. Not all of the energy transfered from the moving marble is transfered to the static marble as the kinetic energy is dispursed through sound (the 'click' when they collide) heat (produced when two objects collide) and momentum - the force which propels the static marble.
If, when the marble is in motion, it is struck by a second marble travelling along the same trajectory at greater speed, this will cause the first marble to speed up through the same process of transference of energy, thus accelerating it.
It's interesting to note that energy cannot be lost or destroyed - it all gets converted into another form of energy. The energy of a torch is converted into light and heat, a speaker converts energy into sound waves, clapping your hands converts energy from your muscles into sound and heat. This is something to do with one of Newtons Laws of Thermodynamics, please don't ask which one.
Basically, it can be suggested that acceleration is the transference of energy resulting in motion / increased velovity.
