Well there are lots of types of internal bleeds depending on location. I am assuming your friend has a Upper GI bleed. If someone is vomiting blood (hematemesis) it usually comes from either the esophagus or stomach. Either sources can give bright red blood. Is your friend an alcoholic? Alcoholics tend to get what doctors call Mallory Weiss tears from vomiting too much. These tears are generally located at the Lower Esophageal Sphincter where the esophagus joins with the stomach.
It could also be a stomach ulcer. Stomach ulcers can result from taking too many NSAIDs (like aspirin and ibuprofen), having H. Pylori infection, stomach cancer, head trauma, severe bodily burns or genetic influences such as increase acid secretion or decreased Prostacyclin production.
If this person has any liver problems due to Hepatitis, chronic alcoholism, etc. This can also cause rupture of the veins in the esophagus. Liver problems causes a back of venous blood, which then try to bypass the liver by going through the veins of the esophagus, causing them to enlarger and thin out. This puts a person at risk for esophageal venous rupture.
An endoscopy (a small camera is run down your esophagus into your stomach) is usually performed to locate the bleed and the bleed can either be sutured or cauterized. After the surgery, a hemoccult test can be performed to check for bleeds that are not apparent. This is simply done by smearing some feces on a little card which changes color if blood is present.

It usually means they are bleeding somewhere, most likely the throat, esophogas, sorry too lazy to look up spelling there, stomach, or possibly something has burst, an ulcer, infection, lots of different reasons. They will probably do a scan of some sort, possibly a scope or cat scan, find the problem and then decide how to repair. If it's an ulcer, they'd be given medication to heal it, coat it, and antibiotics to kill germs in it, some ulcers are from bacteria. Sometimes surgery to fix a tear is needed.
I'm sure your friend will be ok, it's good they are in the hospital where they can get thehelp they need.

Depends on how bad the Bleed is, if its a bruise, you do nothing, some bleeds, most intestinal track ulcers can heal with medication, some will require surgery, if its a bad bleed they will do surgery, say if you received if from trauma, such as a MVA, or blunt force trauma. Aneurysm's can cause internal bleeding as well, this is a leak or burst of an artery due to weakness of a artery wall, some aneurysm's are in-operable ,especially those in major arteries, these are the ones that can kill in minuets, lucky for us that they don't get diagnosis most times until they have already burst..........can you imagine living knowing that at any moment it could burst, and you will die almost instantly?
There are many types of internal bleeds.

Throwing up red blood means there is a small blood vessel in the area above the stomach. Stomach acids cause blood to turn coffee colored, or black. So if it is an ulcer in the stomach you will throw up dark black not red.
First they determine what it is that is bleeding by doing a lot of tests. They keep food out of your stomach as this makes the stomach continue to excrete the enzymes that digest your food. When the stomach is actively putting out the enzymes it is moving...so not putting food in makes it rest. They also give you meds into your blood veins to keep the stomach from doing this.
This over a period of time will help stop the bleeding. Then they slowly give you food along with medicine to heal whatever is causing the bleeding.

They do NOT make you eat gauze, paper towel or band aid to fix it or soak up the blood but they DO look for the source of it and attempt to mend it like stitch it up or operate.

Remove blood from cavities, identify the source of the bleeding and tie it off, cauterize it, or otherwise stop it. Keep fluids up, observe, and wait.

Normally that means that something inside has busted... or broke... and they can go in and fix it....
But if he is throwing up blood then I would have to say that is an ulser... and its not that hard to cure.

It is not good. Not good at all. Throwing up blood would be from the lungs or upper digestive tract.
Google it.
