all three of the type your looking at are wonderful dogs for your family, all loving, loyal ,and protective and all good with kids...no idea how old your kids are, but the A.S.T. which is the smallest of the three ,loves to play, is often silly , has such an animated fun personality and is very affectionate as well as very protective of the family, the rottie also is just the most lovable sweet dog and very smart and protective, the dobie also a wonderful protective dog but can be a bit neurotic.... I would go with the rottie or the pit myself... I have all three breeds, plus a Shepperd-chow

I have owned 2 rottweillers and I love the breed!! I cannot own them now, because we have Chihuahuas, and our chis do not like big dog breeds, plus one of the rotties hurt one of the chis a few years ago, by stepping on its leg. The chi needed surgery It was an accident, but with the difference in size, an accident between a chi and a rottie could be fatal for the chi.

They are a wonderful breed tho if raised right.

However, the AST can be dangerous for kids, they have powerful jaws as they are cousins of the PitBull.... Although, maybe they don't want to make any intenional harm, they could... I heard/read that they are banned in several places.

The doberman is very active and requires large, open places for running... They are also very demanding, are you willing to spend at least one hour for a full high-impact excercises?? It is a noble dog...Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament. Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient.

Rottweiler are very nice as well. They are not as big as portrayed, but powerful indeed... actually intimidating. They suffer from hips problems a lot and also develop a condition in the eyes in the early yearsThe Rottweiler is basically a calm, confident and courageous dog with a self-assured aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. A Rottweiler is self-confident and responds quietly and with a wait-and-see attitude to influences in his environment. He has an inherent desire to protect home and family, and is an intelligent dog of extreme hardness and adaptability with a strong willingness to work, making him especially suited as a companion, guardian and general all-purpose dog.

If you a looking for a big, powerful, intimidaing dog have you considered: Great Danes, Rhodesian Ridgebacks (I have one) , Thai Ridgebacks, Mastiffs, BullMastiffs, Irish Wolfhound (largest beed), Newfoundland, Dogo Argentino, Cane Corso, Dogue de Bordeaux (Movie: Turner & Hooch) and/or the Tosa (Japanesse Mastif)???

Dobermans are good dogs, but you can't play rough with them, because they can be aggresive. I would definitely say NO to the Rottweiller because they tend to be extremely aggresive toward strangers. I would go with the terrier.

Doberman and rotteweiller are great family dogs, but the adults have to be VERY strict with the dogs. Both adults. It is a dog, not another family member. I had a rotty, I know.

It really should depend on the size of your yard and weather you live in a apartment, house, complex....... The bigger the dog the more space he'll need to run around in. Don't forget to take your dog for walks around the block!!!!!!!!

go to the AKC Website. I think it is akc.net but it is the American Kennel Club. They have a questionaire on there to determine the right dog. I have a German Sherpherd and she is a mom to my kids...

Depends what kind of person you all are. Are you poodle people? Big dogs people? Tiny dog people? What kind of dog do you have in mind? Go for size and then see which dog of that size you like.
