It is a very good idea for anyone who was in contact with the person, including the whole family, to have prophylactic antibiotic treatments for a few days, until the level of the bacterial load in the victim has reduced to levels that are not considered to be particulary contagious.

Increasingly there are antibiotic resistant sttains of streptococci, the bacteria that causes scarlet fever, around. Some of these are very difficult to treat and as a result are very dangerous. Don't fool around with this!

When I was a teenager our family passed around a rather nasty strain of strep and my brother got rheumatic fever. We all had to get a shot in the butt, just once. My brother was hospitalized but luckily it was treated before there was any damage to his heart.
