I'm thinking about adopting a puppy, so I'm adding up the costs of the food, toys, collar, treats...etc. So I can kind of get an idea of how much it's going to cost

Different areas and vets charge different, call around and comparison shop. You can also call 1-800-spayusa for a low cost plan in your area.

That's great that you're factoring in the cost of spaying/neutering ahead of time! The cost will depend on the sex, size, and age of the pet, your vet's fees, etc., but whatever the actual price, it's important to remember that it is just a one-time cost—and a bargain when compared to all the benefits.

A lot of communities do have low-cost spay/neuter programs in place, so I'd say the best place to start is by searching for one of those. Here's an article (http://www.charityguide.org/volunteer/fewhours/spay-neuter.htm) that has links to lots of places to find them.

Hope that helps -- and good luck!

Most of the time if you adopt a pet from your local animal shelter, you get a discount on having your new baby spayed or neutered. It can cost anywhere from $80-$250 depending on where you live.
You should get your pet from the local shelter because so many animals are euthanized every day.

It is good that you are considering costs BEFORE you get a pet. The surgery itself can run anywhere from $35 for a dog castration to $125 for a dog spay (more or less depending on where you go). We also recommend an examination and pre-surgical blood work/EKG to get baseline data about your pet and to screen for diseases that may affect young pets but are not yet obvious. There may also be other charges for anesthesia and other assorted surgery fees so be careful when asking a clinic how much they charge for the surgery.

Don't forget about vaccines, heartworm testing & monthly preventative, monthly flea/tick repellent, etc.

I hope you plan to check your local shelter / humane society for your new puppy. Petstores want to make a profit and do not take good care of their merchandise (pets). And I have seen far too many owners have to euthanize their $800 purebred puppy because of accident or illness that they now have no money to take responsibility for.

Pet ownership is a huge commitment that far too many people enter on a whim. There is alot to consider.

Well, I have a 7 wk old Boxer puppy. We've had her 2 weeks. I took her to the vet to have deworming & 1st set of puppy shots. I spent $6 for the deworming & $18 for the shots. She's at the vet right now--I'm about to spend $38 to have her tail docked, $18 for the sedation & $10 for each dewclaw removed. I read that it should cost between $85 & $220 to have them spayed. I think it depends on where you live & who the vet is.

Try the internet. There's a lot of help there. Try Google or Yahoo

If you contact you're local ASPCA (the pound) they can often tell you of a local spay/neuter clinic that may do it for anything from donations to a flat fee. Often males are cheaper than females. Your puppy's life will be longer; your puppy will be less likely to wander from home; and some breeds of puppy will be less likely to be aggressive; if you have your puppy spayed or neutered when they need to be. It's extremely important!

I just got a neuter estimate from my vet, and it was about $230. However, you can get it done at a shelter or SPCA for around $50 - I haven't looked into the specifics for that, and whether it includes everything my vet estimate included, but it seems like it might be a better choice. I have a puppy and he needs to get neutered soon, so I've been looking into this. Good luck! :o)

I just got my 1 year old pit bull neutered. It cost me a total of 230. I also picked him up in the evening so he could be home with me instead of staying over night. I didn't have to get pain meds since I already had some but they usually run like 15 for a few days. He only needed to take some for two days.

Ask 2 or 3 veterinarians and compare prices. Also ask if they have a "Low Cost Spay and Neuter Facility" in your town.

If you adopt a puppy from your local humane society, the adoption price should include the cost of spay/neutering. Our local humane society charges $125 to adopt a puppy. The puppy is then left at the shelter overnight so that the on-site vet can do the surgery.
