Unfortunately, office politics/gossip will continue regardless of what you do. However, if you build people up instead of tearing people down, you will earn a certain level of respect that may exempt you from the office politics/gossip of your work place.

Some of it can be stopped if YOU become the one in charge!! Other than that, try EVERYTHING you can to stay away from the game. Every person who goes into work can do their own part by keeping their mouths SHUT and just do their job! But they just don't do that. What makes ME unhappy is the unfairness, the gossip and the backstabbing. I always feel like I am on the show SURVIVOR when I'm at work! See who is scheming against who and hope you aren't the next one voted off!

Gossiping is like a mental virus - stay away from the gossipers or you will become one yourself. Gossiping is caused by a false sense of elevation derived from concentrating on minor non-relevant aspects of a person.
Just remember that when they are gossiping to you about someone else - take it with a pinch of salt. Also remember that when you're not around, they're gossipping about you to someone else.
They are psychologically sick - feel sorry for them.

Unless it is undermining your work, ignore the gossip. Tune it out and take care of business. You will find that it happens everywhere. It's up to you whether or not you get drawn into the drama.

NO. But you need to refuse to play along when folks are gossiping and starting trouble. Be the most mature and professional person you can be.

I used to watch "The Office" and think it was a horror story, it was so close to the bone with its tales of the minutiae of stapler ownership. It is best not to get involved.
