I think it would depend upon who the individual is, and how much fat and nutrients they have stored up. I'm sure most would die, but NOT all.
And I HATE when people who reply don't know the difference between the word loose and lose.
I'd advise your friend to eat, but don't overdo it. I would try to live off water alone, but I could stand maybe eating some salads and fruits/veggies that have antioxidants.

There are three main ways to lose weight quickly.
1) Use only water as liquid and eliminate all other liquid drinks from your diet. You must drink as much water as possible every day. You must drink about half of your weight. If you have weight of 200 pounds then you must drink about 100 oz of water.
2) The interval between the eating is very important. If you eat once, then you must eat next after 4 hours. You must take breakfast regularly. In the night eat your food three hours before going to bed.
3) Walking is very good. You must walk as much as you can. Walk everywhere you can. Use of elevators and escalators must be reduced and instead of these you must climb stairs more often.
These are some of the fastest ways to lose weight. By just following the simple steps, you can lose your weight very quickly. You must consult your doctor if want to change your diet or exercise routine.

Another huge problem that people encounter when they decide that it is time to lose weight is trying to decide what type of diet to follow. It is easy to feel overwhelmed with the vast number of diet programs which claim that they can teach you how to lose weight fast. Many times the different diets seem to advocate practices that are conflicting, leaving people more confused about what to do when they need to lose weight.
The result of this confusion is often that people will toss up their hands in defeat and return to their unhealthy eating habits that have created the weight problem in the first place. They question if they should focus on low fat foods, which tend to be diets that are higher in carbohydrates.
Then there are many types of low carb diet plan programs that are widely promoted and which have many celebrity endorsements. Some of these programs say you don't need to worry about how much fat you eat in your diet, but that you will be able to lose weight quickly simply by limiting the amount of carbs that you eat. At the same time there are many who say this approach is dangerous and unhealthy.

It all depends on how much she weighs right now. Either way it is a VERY BAD IDEA. She could very well die or be in a very grave state at the end of her water fast. Advise her not to do it because I do not understand why in the world someone would go on a water fast not to lose wait. She will just quickly regain any wait she lost during her 40 day water fast and the only way to lose wait and keep it off is to exercise and diet it off, not being anorexic.

Following is a snip (full article is available at slate.com) of a hunger striker.
Despondent over the injuries he allegedly caused his stepdaughter while setting his estranged wife's house ablaze, Charles Robert McNabb is on a hunger strike at the Spokane County Jail. He has lasted 123 days so far, subsisting on water and the occasional cup of coffee. How long can a hunger striker expect to survive?
Sixty days, give or take, is the rule of thumb, though results vary depending on the faster's body fat and striking strategy. Physiologists generally agree that no human being can survive losing more than 40 percent of his body mass—a threshold that McNabb, stunningly, may already have crossed, if reports of his starting (180 pounds to 185 pounds) and current (around 100 pounds) weights are to be believed.
Fasting becomes dangerous after just three to five days, at which point the body begins breaking down fat in order to produce energy. When the liver is reduced to breaking down fat (in lieu of the usual glucose), it produces ketone bodies, a toxic byproduct. These can be excreted through the urine, and a particular variety known as acetone can be expelled through the lungs. (Acetone makes a person's breath smell like pears.) Ketone bodies can also be oxidized by the brain in order to make the fuel it needs. But when ketone bodies become too numerous in the bloodstream, they can cause ketoacidosis, a potentially lethal condition that afflicts some diabetics.
It's all downhill after Week 3, or whenever weight loss exceeds 18 percent of the starting weight. The body tries to compensate by slowing down its metabolism, entering "starvation mode." Still, once fat stores are entirely depleted, the body has no choice but to mine the muscles and vital organs for energy. The striker simply wastes away as his body, quite literally, consumes itself.
The 60-day figure that is commonly quoted as the absolute limit assumes that the striker is a healthy adult with approximately 24 pounds of fat on his or her frame. Someone with a higher fat content might be able to last longer, since that person's body could delay turning to the vital organs for fuel.
Gandhi, perhaps history's most famous hunger striker, never fasted for more than 21 days.
The bottom line: to safely lose weight, it is best to drink a diet supplement, such as Ensure. There is a full (high calorie, high fat, high protein) version and a light version. I believe that Ensure Lite (or similar name) has about 260 calories. More importantly, it contains enough fat, protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to keep you healthy. Consuming three cans per day would be around 780 calories. IMPORTANT: No joke. Consult a physician before embarking on any diet this severe! Liver damage can occur if the body is deprived of food and nutrients long enough.
Good luck.

No secret.
For weight loss exercise such as swimming, running, cycling and even walking can help but dieting can often help a lot more than exercise.
A very good and healthy weight loss diet is the DASH diet that can also help to reduce high cholesterol and high BP.
The DASH diet includes a lot of fruit and vegetables combined with whole grains and cereals plus low fat dairy products such as low fat cheese, milk and yogurt as well as lean meats.
Good serials are Weetbix, oatmeal, oatbran, wheat bran and wheat germ.

Reading this I really want to share something because I spent many many years jumping from diet to diet without getting any real results until I saw Pams magic plan (i found it on google). It is without a doubt the most weight loss that I have ever achieved and I am still trim to this day.

I would not suggest a water fast for that long- the weight lost depends on a few other factors but I can assure you she will lose muscle mass and energy. Try a juice fast- much healthier for you

I was shy, I didn't want to be the centre of attention, I didn't like getting my picture taken. Yes, I had to speak in public, and that was because it was for my job. So I would get up there and I would speak, .but I really didn't want anyone to really be looking at me.
Since I've lost my weight, it's more like look at me, look what I've done. And I feel good about myself. I bought a new wardrobe. I get up there, I speak in front of people, and it's fantastic. It's the best thing I've ever done in my life.
