I'm not convinced he was an atheist. Many of his speeches refer to God. He also said "I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive you he could look up into the heavens and say, ‘There is no God.’"
Just because someone does not adhere to a particular religious faith, you should not assume he is an atheist.
