I don't think there is a best kind of dog, it is just which ever one looks at you with those big sad eyes and wins your heart.

The best kind to get is the kind you will actually look after and can afford to feed. Big dogs = big food bills. Little dogs = little food bills.

If you have loads of time, energy and a place to exercises and train them, get a boarder collier. They are really, really, really smart.

Otherwise, get a book on breeds. If you can afford it, get the breed that matches your temperament. If you can't afford the mega bucks for a pure-bred, make a list of the breeds that you like and make lots of trips to the local humane society until you find the perfect dog. You might find a mutt that has some of each of the breeds you're interested in.

Some humane societies will keep your request on file and let you know when the right dog comes in. My pooch is a rescued dog & we were 2nd in line for him.

The best kind of dog is one who is active, has a good "personality" and is gentle with children and/or other pets. Try "rescuing" an animal from your local animal shelter first. So many wonderful animals are waiting for a good home and would make very loving pets!

It's not a case of what dog is best to have, but, what dog is best suited for you. Go here and the Breed finder will help determine what type of dog will be best suited to fit your personality and lifestyle. It will give you more than one breed or type of dog to choose from.

If the dog does not fit with you, you and the dog will not be happy with each other.

Well it depends if you want a calm dog you should get a shiatsu, and if you wand a wild jumpy dog you should get a Labrador.

Vizsla. They're big enough to be a proper dog, not one of those yappy things, and they're completely crackers but will love you unconditionally.
