Everyone is afraid of something. Just keep a nightlight or flashlight by your bed.

It is unhealthy to sleep with the light on. Your body produces melatonin while "in the dark." You need this. Turn off the TV and the light. If you have to keep a night light on make it around the corner from your bed.

Try and think your way through the fear. What is it that you are actually afraid of? You probably haven't been getting that far with it. Just experiencing the fear and brain freezing there. That is sort of the definition of a phobia--irrational unfounded fear.

Those who are proud to say that they are not afraid of the dark actually have some other fears, like bugs, the boogeyman, illnesses, and many more.

So it is quite normal to be afraid of the dark. We all have certain fear factors which we have not yet overcome. Usually these fears were encountered early in life and were not dealt with properly. So they remain in the deep recesses of our minds, waiting for the time to haunt us with the help of our imagination.

I think all fears can be overcome. Familiarity is one way.

most people would say no but I am 48 years old and if I am alone at night I am afraid of total darkness. I think it is because without our sight being clear we feel very voulnerable to what ever may be there or may not be there. and now in this world of not even feeling safe in our own homes it just amplifies it that much more....I now have alot of those airwick plug in nightlights all over my house and I am not as afraid anymore......when I have to be here by myself.

all depends on what level your fear is, if your just wary about whats out there, don't worry your not nuts.
if the fear is paralyzing or effects what you do or do not do you might want to seek some help as this is not normal.
