Sarcasm can hurt and be mean spirited. Irony isn't hurtful. Irony often isn't intentional, while sarcssm is intentional.

These links should help.

Definitions
Irony: The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
Sarcasm: A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound.
Literally - Earlier I answered the question someone made of asking whether Starship Troopers was the greatest movie ever (a question of sarcasm to begin with) "You are a Jenius with a capital J" I realize "Jenius" is spelled with a g, but to make that statement, would be me referring to how rediculous it is to state that Starship Troopers is the best movie ever...sarcasm
Irony is what used to make SNL funny up until the year after Will Ferrell left.

By the way, irony has NOTHING to do with Alanis Morissette's song. Rain on a wedding day isnt ironic, it sucks.

sarcasm unlike irony is intentional. You are sarcastic on purpose and you are trying to be funny while conveying an answer for example, to a question. Irony is unintentional and not in your hands most times and it is more natural.

Sarcasm is simply when someone says the opposite of what they mean ... like, "Love that green sweater with the pink polk-dots", but they're just making fun of it.
Irony is harder to expalin... I'll use Allanis Morisette's song lyrics: It's like rain on you're wedding day, and like having 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife, or a no-smoking sign on your ciggarette break.
Do you get it?
