Yes, there are. You should really get a local person to show you around if possible. If that's not possible, you might want to stick to neighborhoods like Bay Ridge, Park Slope, Borough Park, Bensonhurst, Gravesend, and such.

In general (and there are a lot of exceptions) areas with a lot of identical apartment buildings should be avoided; areas with apartment buildings that all look different from one another or areas with one or two family houses are more safe.

Like NY Man mentioned, there are a few dicey areas that you would not want to be wandering around late at night looking like a tourist, however, those areas are not really "touristy" areas. To add to the list of "Must see" areas of Brooklyn:

Ft. Greene & Williamsburg -- Hip areas with excellent restaurants and trendy nightspots.

Clinton Hill - the neighborhood next to Ft. Greene that is up and coming with restaurants, etc.

Downtown Brooklyn -- The area where the Brooklyn Bridge is located (great to walk across), the Brooklyn Marriott Hotel. This neighborhood (if you want down Boerum Place) runs into . . .

Brooklyn Heights and Montague Street - has plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. Also Montague Streets runs towards the river and the Promenade which is located over the Brooklyn Queens Expressway and has a wonderful view of Lower Manhattan.

Other things to see . . .

Visit Junior's Restaurant on the corner of Flatbush and Dekalb avenues. The restaurant is most famous for its cheesecakes, the rest of the food I would not bother with.

Brooklyn Museum - On Eastern Parkway and Washington Avenue, on of the best museums and best kept secrets in NYC.

Brooklyn Botanical Gardens - is located across the street/within Prospect Park, and near the Brooklyn Museum.

If you need any more info on specific areas or ideas on where to eat, see, etc. feel free to e-mail me.

All places have good and bad areas. Something can always go wrong in a good area also. Just don't look like an obvious tourist when you go to Brooklyn and you will survive. I'm from there so I know

You should avoid East New York Brooklyn and Crown Heights for sure. Bed-Stuy can be a bit dicey at night. OK during the day.
That applies to Red Hook and Gownus and Flatbush.

You should be sure to visit the following areas for sure (if you have time).
Brooklyn Heights
Cobble Hill (Smith or Court Street)
Park Slope (5th and 7th Ave)
Coney Island
Prospect Park (Brooklyn's Central Park)

The resource below may help.

Enjoy your visit to the Real New York

just stay away from brooklyn. There are parts which aren't so bad, but if you're a tourist, brooklyn is not a good idea. You need to know people and your way around. If your not from around there, try not to be.

Brooklyn is not a great place for tourists. Stay in Manhattan there is more to see. Brooklyn, although it is rich in history, is more of a residential area.

i just came from brooklyn and like any city it has its bad areas if you are driving you should be fine just dont leave anything visible in your car and dont drive around unless u know your way around. There are a lot of places to go on foot so just go during the day and be alert because people do snatch bags and chains in broad daylight. If u use the subway dont wear flashy jewelry also try not to look like a "tourist" people will try to take advantage of you.
