They were taken off the market in 1976 and re-introduced in 1987. There were removed due to concerns over Red Dye #2 causing cancer.

In 1976 there was a controversy over red dye so they got rid of the red m&m which was brought back in the early eighties for christmas time, then brought back forever in 1987. It's not on the m&m time line but it is here:

they were taken off the market because of red dye no-12.Bound to have cancer agents,it was'nt till the later 80's that they were re-presented to the public with the approval of the FDA.OOOPS ,lol,go with the dude above me,i like his answer better.Sorry about that.At least i was close.lol.

The yellow M&M's aren't they a little harmful? Aren't they made with this FD&C Yellow #5??? I mean,if these color additives are so harmful, why put them in food and beverages??
