They are backwards on the right side of the plane, but in the correct way on the left side. It is like any flag: when you see it from one side it is correct, but it would be backwards from the other side (unless it is vertically symmetric). On the plane, they are drawn in way that resembles a flag attached to the aircraft's tail.

Picture the plane moving on the ground or flying. If the flag was real and not painted the wind would cause the flag to fly in that direction with the stars on the left side.

To resemble the way the flag looks in real life. If you will notice one side if facing the correct way, the other is the back side of the flag.
