Dogs have a natural tendency to dig holes. This is because of their evolutionary history. Wolves, foxes, and other dog-like mammals dig holes and bury food for later consumption.

Plus, it's probably fun. Human-beings play sports or watch television for entertainment. Dogs dig holes.

I call it denning. My dog has this horrible habit and it drives me nuts. I cant break her of it, but I have noticed that she does it more frequently when its hot. She digs a kind of semi hole in the dirt and lays in it. It gets even worse when she is about to give birth, even though in the end she gives birth in her dog house. I believe its an instinctive thing that some dogs do. In others it's a reaction to boredom. When dogs get bored they display behaviors such as this, tearing up furniture, getting in the garbage an so on. Hopefully yours is the latter and is correctable. I'm sure someone will post ways to correct this behavior

they like to dig especially when it is hot outside, the dirt underneath is cool so they will dig to get to this point and lay in the hole, and everyday keep digging out more and more to hit "the cool spot", it is also a dogs hunting nature to dig for small rodents underground like moles and last but not least, to bury and hide things....mine do it all the time, but i just go back and fill them in with dirt...:)

It wears their nails down. If they don't dig their nails get to long and then their people have to clip them. Easier on everyone to just dig.
