My s. daughter is on Formal probation in CA. I'm in another state. She showed up on my doorstep the other day. But I don't want to get into any trouble for this. What do I do??

to the people that ask. No she isn't trying to make things right or make her life better. She is just plain out running. She tries to tell me she ain't on probation, but I know she is. She has never went to see him, she just got in trouble over drugs last month. I don't know who to call. She hasn't changed none, still doing her drugs and so forth, can't put her out, her dad is to soft hearted.

I hope she showed up with the intention of making things right again. I would assume she has missed an appointment with her probation officer by now. If so, there is likely to be a warrant for her arrest for a probation violation.

If she violates probation she can be "punished" in several ways including extending the probation time, modifying the release order (ie adding to the conditions), or possibly jail time. They can also revoke the probation entirely.

The other concern is that if she is picked up by police out of state she will be considered a Fugitive of Justice. From there she will most likely have to be extradited back to California. Not only is there the possibility of sitting in jail for a few months waiting extraction but also needing a bail bond for a release condition.

You might be able to express to her all the negative reactions this escapade has caused and encourage her to self-surrender and deal with the situation. The longer she waits, the more sever the possible ramifications may be.

Be a good step-mother! She obviously came to you because she sensed safety. Be good and tell her the reality of her situation and try to talk her into returning and completing her probation without any further incidence. "If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing you do is stop digging." I see where others have said you should call the authorities immediately and turn her in. If you think communist Russia was all the rage then sure, but if you believe in being a parent and humanity, you be the parent first! I'm sure there are enough people out there that can't wait to turn her in, don't leave this young lady feeling like there is no place to turn, that's wrong. She needs help, now see what you can do.

Hold up! sit her down and talk with her you have some time. She isn't on America's Most Wanted, she only has to see her Probation Officer once a month.

Is her Dad with you? I would definitely let her legal guardian know where she is so that they don't worry. You have a lot to talk about; maybe, start with how did you get here? All teenagers need to be aware of the dangers of hitchhiking.

The one thing is this; of all of the people in this young girls life, She came to see her Stepmother!!! This is so out of the norm for teenage behavior it only says how much she loves and respects you. So, try to be gentile...more than anything this girl needs a friend right now.

Well you probably shouldn't have gotten on here if you wanted to resolve this without the police. If they find out that she has left the state, they will find her. And, when they do, they will not be very lenient. I don't know what she received probation for but whatever it was she just made it worse. The best thing you can do is get her back before anyone finds out. Good Luck

find out why she left and let her know that you can get into trouble too for her being there. There is probably a long story attached, unless she is the child from h*ll she may be trying to turn over a new leaf and wants to be "home"... But most importantly get her back to Cali ASAP before they violate her probation and send her back to jail, there are no "freebies" in the corrections dept.
