I believe it was, at least, 300 years or so (AD 313 per Wikipedia) until Constantine converted to Christianity and the heat was taken off of the Christians.

not sure, but it was emperor Constantine who finally outlawed it, i'm fairly sure of that. Try googling roman emperor's.
