ctrl + a works

I need to select different lines of text

If you're selecting different lines of text (non-continuous), you can hold down Ctrl while you click off to the left to select each line individually (as long as they're not in the same paragraph)

this is the part that does not work>> it does not keep the old selection

Hold down the right mouse button and drag to select the text you want.

You can also select text in Word by putting your cursor at the start of the selection, then holding down Shift and clicking at the end of the selection.

Ctril+5 also will "Select All"

You ought to use your help option on the menu bar at the top of the application you can click on the word help then click on contents and index depending on the version of the program then you should enter the word (text) in the search box. This will give you all the possibilities of the command you want to perform. Otherwise you should just select each section one at a time you want to highlite, and of course then use the copy command. I think you will save time at least untill you discover what is best for your situation. Not knowing the details makes it hard to give percise or correct answers.Hope this helps.
