There are several choices.
1. A sheet of stainless steel. Drill holes in corners and attach with a decorative topped screw.
2. A reverse painting (simple design) on the back of a sheet of glass - you could even use appliques (attach to wall and place glass on top). Same application, have holes drilled into corners for screws and attach.
Using tile does present a problem w/keeping grout clean. Be cautious using vinyl, especially tiles, the heat will soften the adhesive and the tiles will slide out of placement.
Good Luck!

If the wall is a painted one the simplest way is to clean it real good, buy what ever color of paint you want as long as its enamel and then add a one pint can of clear varnish to the paint. Stir it in real good and paint the wall. The varnish you added Willl harden the paint and grease splatters wil,l wash off easily.

I would say find one of your favorite paintings on the Internet, print it and then laminate it. Then stick it on the wall!

You could put up a piece of clear plexiglass. It's pretty cheap, clear, so you wont really notice it, and it cleans up easy.
