It was a knock on affect. If one country on one side went to war with one on the other they would ALL go to war. Sebian nationalist kills Austro-Hungarian Prince, AustroHungary demands nationalist. Serbia refuses to hand him over, Austria Hungary declares war on Serbia, so Serbia's ally Russia declared war on Austria Hungary so AustriaHungary's ally Germany declares war on Russia so Russia's ally France declares war on Germany and England joins in coz they'd finished their Splendid Isolation and didn't wanna be left out and declred war on Germany. So the Alliance(Germany&co) and the Entente(France &co.) were at War-WW1!

The heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, was assasinated by a Serbian terrorist, Gavarilo Princip in Sarajevo in 1914. Austria-Hungary sought a war with Serbia using the assasination as a pretext. Imperial Germany, an ally of Austria-Hungary supported their allies claim against Serbia.
Imperial Russia however, viewed itself as the defender of Slavs, which was the dominant ethnic group in Serbia and considered the Balkans in its sphere of influence.
France allied itself with Russia hoping to avenge its humiliating defeat in the Franco-Prussian war.
As the two smaller countries, Serbia and Austria-Hungary went to war, their alliance with Germany and Russia, drew these two nations into war along with France.
Great Britain was initially not involved, but became involved on the Allied side when Germany invaded Belgium, a country whose neutrality Britain was pledged to defend. German troops invaded through Belgium hoping to knock France out of the war quickly.
Hope this helps.
