Running, biking, swimming, etc. Do it at a rate that gets your heart really pumping for at least 45 minutes a day 5-6 days a week

Cardio is a word that defines the heart. Cardio workouts or exercise means that you do something a little more strenuous to make your heart pump faster. Before you do any type of cardio exercise, speak to your doctor about it first. Cardio workouts aren't for everyone. Your doctor may approve, if he or she does, do some light cardio workouts whether at your local gym or by exercise tapes. If your doctor says no, then ask him or her what exercise you can do that won't be so harmful to the heart or make it work so hard. Be smart with your exercise. No matter what it is, take it slow and gradually build yourself up. Good luck to you and I hope I was of some help to you!

Cardio is the medical term used to reference the heart. From Greek kardia: heart. The Greek spelling using k is the reason for the usage of K in EKG (electrocardiogram).

Also used in reference to exercises and/or equipment intended for cardiovascular fitness and endurance training (aerobic exercise).
Cardiovascular exercise simply means that you're involved in an activity that raises your heart rate to a level where you're working, but can still talk (aka, in your Target Heart Rate Zone). Here's why cardio is so important:

It's one way to burn calories and help you lose weight
It makes your heart strong so that it doesn't have to work as hard to pump blood
It increases your lung capacity
It helps reduce risk of heart attack, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes
It makes you feel good
It helps you sleep better
It helps reduce stress
I could go on all day, but you get the point
Bottom line: you need cardio if you want to get your weight under control and get your stress to a tolerable level.

Cardio is basically anything that exercises your heart. It's short for cardiovascular exercise. Basically, what you can do is run, jog, swim, and do anything that involves a self-propelled movement of the body (not weight training) for cardiovascular exercise. It helps improve the strength of the heart and your endurance. Also, it helps tone your legs.
