I would suggest taking the bus - I think the shortline bus runs from up there- check it out. If they don't stop in manhattan - you can always get off somewhere close like new rochelle new york or white plains new york where you can transfer over to the metro north train which the last stop is in manhattan- the metro north is an additional ten bucks( or less)

or even check am-track and if your a student- don't forget to tell them so they can give you a discount

You don't say where you're coming from, so it's hard to say between driving and flying. The rise in gas prices will definately affect the total price of driving. If you're coming from a far distance, you have to add in food costs, and motel rooms (or wherever you're going to sleep) for the added time it will take to get there, vs. a plane trip. Add up the cost for gas, food, shelter for the time it takes to get there *and* back. Then find the price of airfare.... orbitz.com is pretty good. I wouldn't even mess with Greyhound unless you don't have a car. It's only a little cheaper compared to airfare, and it takes *so* much longer to get there because of all the in-between stops. Plus, it's pretty much unpleasant if you're traveling a long distance.

Fly to Newark airport in NJ (usually less expensive than NYC airports) and take air train (under $15 per person one way).

More specifics could be given if you give:
Where you're coming from.
How many people are coming with you.
Any other considerations: Wheelchairs, babies, etc.

If you are coming from Binghamton, NY, the cheapest way to NYC is via Greyhound Bus.
