Ah, that is a very good question and has been asked since very old times. To answer it is very difficult but I shall try my best.
Perhaps it is because we are not perfect. In second place, people love themselves more than their neighbor, but they trick themselves into believing that what they do is correct because it is them who are doing it ( here is a matter of EGO ). NOBODY, not even the most ferocious criminals think of themselves as being bad people. They justify themselves, let's say, like Hitler did. Hitler created an indeology to justify what he said and did. The curious thing is that in Nurenberg, when the top nazis were on trial, not one of them used Hitler's teachings to defend themselves

Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven.
Sometimes I get tired of being the ONLY one living/practicing the golden rule, and I am discouraged.

Although the golden rule is nice and nifty it is not in the bible

the bible states to love your neighbor as yourself

and people who love themselves are willing to correct themselves

and if you neighbor needs correction then you should feel obligated to correct them out of love

I try my very best to. I am a Christian, that does not make me perfect. Just forgiven. I am also a human.

I do, however, try my very best to treat others as I like to be treated. I do not cheat or steal or try to with knowledge take advantage of anyone.

I really think that most do it's just that they got some of the words wrong.
It seems today that it's do unto others before they do it to you.

I think that if you "talk the talk", you should "walk the walk" if they don't "practice what they preach", they are not true Christians. Read Galatians 5:14-25 regarding that scriptural advice.

They want to be Christians so that God will protect them from harm. They did not do what God wants them to do ie to treat his fellow human beings as brothers and love them as they love themselves.
