I believe the verse refers to placing your faith in God or Jesus and not man made instituitions. Pretty sure it was NT. Any help would be appreciated.

Galatians 1:8 But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you the good news contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed.

God wants us to be reconciled to Him. Our sins have separated us from God. He sent Jesus His only Begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish and will have everlasting life.

James 1:26,27 If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless. This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father, to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Galatians 1:13,14. Paul was advanced in Judaism, very zealous for His religion & He persecuted the Church for it. Until He met Jesus.

Ephesians 2:8,9. By grace you are saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.

Religion is many times dead works. Once one has faith in God then the works that are done are out of obedience to God. If one builds on Christ Rock Foundation perishable, it gets fried. If one builds with obedience to God, it is everlasting. A person can be very religious with dead works. There is so many verses on Faith in God or People of Faith. In the bible chapter John it describes how religion is not man made in fact , religion was around before any of us mortals were made by God. God created religion and belief not man. look in the chapters John and Matthew in the bible, that will explain it to you if I haven't already. In the 2nd chapter of Timothy - 2 Timothy 3:16 it says that the scriptures are inspired by Jehovah God. Not all religion is man made. The Jehovah's Witness religion is completely bible based and the bible was written by 40 divinely inspired men over a period of about 1600 years (more or less) . For more information contact me or a local Jehovah's witness in your area.

The Bible teaches many places that what originates from man and not from God is false even as it teaches there are false prophets and teachers. However we do not throw out the baby with the bath water. It does teach a true religion also in Christ,

James 1:27
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

When you have to do a work to get in God's favor that is a religion. James tells to the Nation of Israel to visit the fatherless and widows. James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. Jesus called the religious leaders of His day devils. John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. In the age of Grace that we live in today, The Lord Jesus Christ did it all for us on the cross. He died for our sins He was buried and took our sins away and rose again the third day for our justification. Salvation is a gift, all we have to do is believe and trust in what He did for us. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
