I'm looking for a digital camera. I've never really been a fan of digital, I've always liked film better, but I want something that I can just snap a picture whenever I want and not have to worry about buying film or developing it or anything. I can't afford a digital SLR, but I want a point and shoot that has some manual controls, a good optical zoom, good image quality, and a good price. Please help!

Nikon Coolpix L4, L3 or L2 would be excellent starting points!!! The lower the number the better the features. ie L2 is better than L4. Goto Circuitcity.com and select the box that say compare cameras and compare the 3 side by side. This is a very handy tool as I quickly learned while shopping for mine.

According to the 2006 Consumer Reports buying the best Compact Digital Camera is the Canon PowerShot A510. It is listed there for $180 and is listed at Very Good. It's got 3 megapixels and four times optical zoom.

I have the Kodak z740 and it's awesome!!!! I paid around 300 when it first came out...it's great....I love it. Easy to use and probably cheaper now. It seems to be exactly what you are looking for.

If these don't sound good go to www.cnet.com and find some great reviews!

P.S. Optical Zoom is what to look for....digital zoom doesn't really matter.

So, under about $1000 with
* 'some' manual controls
* 'good' optical zoom
* 'good' image quality
* 'good' price
You probably thought you were pretty specific, but that actually still leaves about 500 models to chose from.
I'm a fan of Kodak, Canon and Panasonic for the point & shoots. There have some duds, but generally you can't go wrong with those 3 brands.
Here's a great site to narrow the field down yourself - you can plug in all the stuff that you're looking for in a camera and a database will return all the models that match your criteria: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp
That site also has full reviews for a lot of cameras. Another great site for reviews is this one: http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html
Best wishes!

I had a canon digital camera and it was not as good as people made it out to be. I recently bought the casio exlilim Z-60 and it is a great camera.

The camera takes pictures instantly, no long delay, like in my canon camera. The quality of the pictures are great, there are many shooting modes to use, and the camera is really easy to use. The screen is also very big 2.5' and the camera is very slim. It is easy to carry around and take places. I am very happy with my purchase. I did a lot of research before I bought this camera.

I have a 5.3 mega pixel HP photo smart 935. Nice camera and nothing wrong with HP. It was more for the wife, I prefer Canon myself. I still have my EOS 650. Digital is cool but depending on your level of photography, you may not need a lot of mega pixals..5.3 and up is for real Pros. And like you said, SLR's are costly..lot's of good cameras, I guess it all comes down to preference..good luck.
