At this moment in time, it is Politically Correct not to insult Islam for fear of alienating this section of the community. What gets me is that this seems to make it open season on every other religion. This is wrong! Why, because in open debate you should be able to tear apart the base lines of anything in an argument (as long as its valid or be willing to accept that someone else may be right/you are wrong) without facing the threat of a suicide bomber trying to cosy up to you just so he can get to heaven and enjoy some virgins.

I'm not sure of your intentions, but it is nevertheless true that Islam has NOT had the volume and quality of sophisticated criticism it deserves.
While the rest of the Abrahamic tradition has the likes of Espinoza and literally thousands of other well-versed zappers, the totality of serious Islamic critics can scarcely fill a small room.
Some of this is a liberal reflex which instinctively recoils at the blathering of ignorant zealots and bigots opposed to "other" religions. Certainly no responsible thinker wants these twits as allies. But it is time to put aside these misgivings and give Islam the scrutiny it deserves. The reference below is a good start re how to get this moved into the center stage of intellectual discourse.
UPDATE: As you can see from many of the answers, the "twit factor" is very real.

It is in my opinion never correct to attack someones beliefs.
That will only cause hard feelings and completely eliminate any possibility of having a meaningful dialog.
People are changed through reason and love.
Not hateful words and anger.

because some pople dont care about right or wrong. They prefer chaos.
This is a study I am currently doing myself. Why people prefer living in chaos, starting fights even when they know they are wrong.
Poeples brains are just not wired right in some cases.

let me say to every unmuslim here, that the war this asker and whom are like he are fighting is a war of hate, the main stream of Muslims lives good and are good people in every community they live in (USA - EUROPE) and they - the Muslims - hate terrorists and what they do, no body can say about Islam it's a secret evil organization consists of hate with 1300,000,000 member.. if someone said this , that means he is crazy
I want to say that those people like YOU who gave their life to fight Islam and want everybody to hate Muslims are calling for DESCREMINATION, HATE then WAR between the main 2 religions in the world. AND THAT WAR IS BETWEEN THE ONLY 2 RELIGIONS WHO WORSHIP THE SAME GOD (jews also worship the same God but they all are 14 millions , so am talking about the main 2 religions who pray to OUR God , THE GOD OF BOTH OF US .
WE MUSLIMS ARE THE ONLY RELIGION ON EARTH BESIDE CHRISTIANITY WHO BELIVE IN JESUS , we pray to the God of muses , john , David , Soliman , Adam and Eve , we belive in God (called Allah in our religion) who sent all of those , we belive in the story of the creation , the apple , we belive in judjemnt day , in heaven and hell , we belive in angels , devil and demons , we belive in the bible , New and Old testimoney and were ordered by Islam to respect both of them .
WE ARE THE ONLY RELIGION ON EARTH (BESIDE CHRISTIANITY) WHO BELIVE THAT MARRY WAS VERGIN, AND GOD GAVE HER JUSES WITHOUT A HUMAN FATHER TO HIM.
I'M SO UNHAPPY AND I FEEL BITTERNESS TO SEE AND PEOPLE LIKE YOU CALL FOR EVERYBODY TO JOIN SUCH DIRTY WAR .
WHAT DO YOU WANT ? war ? you saw how hard is fighting in Iraq which population is about 20 million, now we are talking about 1.3 billion and I'm sure that will be not good to anyone
We have people like you among Muslims and those are less than 1% , those are called extremists , and if you once moved to the stage of ACT , be the way of thinking you have you will turn into a TERORIST , just like them … they begun like you , they were talking to people about the evil west , America the great Satan , the crusader war against us , the Christians called crusaders , and we have to take a move now before it become too late , before they destroy us and destroy Islam… then step be step the act came as the greatest struggle to DEFEND our nation from THE ATTACK OF THOSE CRUSADORS IN AMERICA AND EUROPE !!!! the same language , am I right ???? the same language you are using now …. The language of extremists
such hating people are the same and the other side of one coin with the Islamic terrorists who gave their life to fight everybody else
TO EVERYBODY THERE, don't listen to the sound of evil and hate. And remember, Muslims HATE terrorists, so everybody else: DONT LISTEN TO THE VOICE OF YOUR TERRORISTS
P.S : I'M FROM Egypt , me and almost everyone I met since el zarkawy was killed were so happy with his death , and we all consider him an evil terrorist ( those few people who were not that happy were narrow minded enough to consider him a freedom fighters against the invading army , but even those – who are very few amongst Egyptians – don’t accept the terrorist acts of killing civilians , decapitating hostages and those horrible and dirty acts )

It should be politically and religiously correct to scrutinize all religions and all ministers thereof, whether they be political or religious ministers. Yet it should not be politically nor religiously correct to play the blame game, wanting to be right only to make others wrong, since we all are one, and there is no respect of persons with God. For sides wars have 'side effects', to both scape-goats & dumb-sheep thereof such left vs right sides wars, who haven't figured out the Son of Man has one thing in store for both sides: destruction, as it was in the days of Noe: Lk 17.
Mark and avoid them which cause "division": Romans 16:17, so that there be no divisions among you: 1Cor 1:10, should include "Jesus", who flat out said he did not come to bring peace, but rather "division": Mt 10:34; Lk 12:51, and notably there was "division", and "because of him": Jn 7:43; Jn 9:16; Jn 10:19. For "Jesus", born under the law, and of woman, notably plays two parts(sons) in Jn 5: Son of God and Son of Man, with two resurrections being notable therein: one unto damnation and one unto life. Hence we are not called the body of Jesus, but rather called the body of Christ, for Christ is not divided about law and grace, rather Christ is our "peace", who hath abolished the law. And eternal salvation, also peace with God, is notably "through Jesus->Christ". To wit: that God was in "Christ" reconciling the world unto himself... which things are an allegory, and a mystery, to solve in time, by "give more earnest heed" to what's been said, especially to see-king and find-ing clues such as "seek ye first" the kingdom of God & his righteousness, and "find grace" at the throne of grace, where only "mercy" is obtainable as the crown that's incorruptible and immortal of such corruptible and incorruptible things, mortal and immortal things, spiritual things such as law and grace, that we're told to compare(not mix). For the mix-tu-are of "contrary" things only makes one thing: one proselyte who is notably "more the child of hell(law)", and such is an oxyMORON with a BAD ending, due to willing ignorance.
The "grace" of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.
