Marriage did come about without religion. It came about because men considered women property and didn't want to share their property with other people. Hence, they called it marriage and said that God protects the sanctity of marriage.

There is no God. Man has made God to regulate each other and make men submit themselves. Implicit obedience cannot be had if men are not made to live in a fantasy of the unknown. A simple way for peace and order is to make men believe in the unknown, i.e. why man created God. Marriage is not essential for sex, but promiscuity leads to sterility and now even AIDS - people may not ponder and understand scientific reasoning, neither is there a will on the intelligentsia to explain the truth to the mass. Short cut formula is to make people believers. Unbridled free sex is not good for people - scientifically - but simple obedience will be got and monogamy would be made acceptable only with sanction from God or religion. So it is not God who has been the reason for any idea much less on marriage and sex.

If there were no God, you wouldn't be here to ask the question.
Marriage and sex within marriage began as an ownership thing. So, the man would know that the children born of a woman were his. The property and alliances the wife brought with her would stand as a contract.

Yes, of course. It only makes sense. Man eventually became enthralled with morality after thousands of years of philosophy. Marriage would have become a standard eventually. If there were no marriage and no one had any morals, std's would be rampant, or there would be very many virgins! I didn't think 'marriage' came into existance until about a thousand years ago or less?

There is no god. Man did think of the idea of marriage. Marriage is not, and never has been or will be, essential for sex.

Man likely would have deemed marriage and their perceived ownership of women necessary for the women to have sex, to help the men feel 'secure' in the paternity of the children that they choose to rear.
Men do not, did not, and would not consider marriage necessary for their own sexual activity. They only use it as a control over the sexuality of women ( the freedom of which which frightens them to no end) to help them think they know which children are theirs.

I do not believe that mankind would be free from jealousy if there were unlimited partners with no strings. Mankind has always wanted exclusive rights to the man or woman they love, and they always will.

If there were no real god, then we would have invented an artificial one, and he, she, it, whatever would have been just as effective as a real one. Just like money - it has no intrinsic value of it own, but it has an extrinsic value because a large enough number of people believe it has value. So if a large enough number of people believe in a god or gods then that would be real to them.

Those with morals would. The immoral just use sex as a contact sport between two people, without any love, or attachments involved.
