I agree with Golden retrievers or Labs they are the best for children. You can stick your whole hand in Labs mouth and they willnot bit down due to the fact they are hunting dogs and the will nor ruin the thing that is hunted.

It is usually not a recommendation to have a puppy in the house until the child is at least 4-5 years old. Puppies require a lot training and time. Very few 22 month olds have the self control to treat a puppy properly. Not saying that all kids will be mean to puppies, but the puppy needs to respect all members of the family and a 22 month old is not going to be able to take part in training a puppy and many will see the 22 month old as a playmate not an authority.

For the comment by the previous person - there is not guarantee that ANY breed will not bite. In fact many bites in home are from the popular breeds such as goldens and labs just because of the numbers that are out there.

If you really want a dog, it would be better to get an older dog that was raised with kids and is known to tolerate the things small children can do to them.

If you want a small dog, I'd recommend a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or a Pekinese. If you want something bigger get an English Springer Spaniel or a Lab or Golden Retriever or an English Setter. All have good temperaments with kids and a fairly easy to train. Labs shed the most and can be pretty rambunctious until after they're two.

Labrador retrievers are the best with children! But before you buy, RESEARCH! Make sure that YOUR environment will work for the dog. It's great that you want to protect your child, but it's not fair to the animal if you and your homelife doesn't fit the animal. (ex: if you work late hours, you live in an apartment, etc.) Make sure that whatever breed you get, that it not only fits your requirements, but that you can make a happy home for the pet as well. Good Luck!

Boxers are wonderful family dogs. My son is 23 months old and we have a male. My sister has 6 kids the oldest is 13 the youngest is 18 months and she has a female. The only time boxers get protective is if somebody new comes into their home. Once they get their sent and realize theyre ok they wag their tails and lick them.

I would get a medium sized dog such as a cocker spaniel or beagle. They are both great with kids, and not as big as some of the others that might knock the kids down, and not too small where they might hurt the dog..

A French Puddle, but you should raise (him/her) with all your love. They don't drop short hairs, do not provoque alergies, they are the smarter dogs, and maybe for the same reason they are a little capricious sometimes.
I have one whom stoled my heart. She is my baby, very obedient, tender, and always ready to learn something else although she is 5 y old.

If you like medium to large dogs, try a female Weimeraner. They are great family dogs and good with children. With their beautiful green eyes and grey short-haired coat, they are easy care, and their playful temperament makes them a good dog to grow up with. They are loyal to family units, not just one member of the family.
