Since we invented the refrigerator we lowered the salt content of our food for better health. Previously, salt and spices were the only ways we could preserve our foods and make older foods palatable.
Lots of the foods in South and Central America are heavily spiced and most of the USA enjoys a good spicy BBQ-grilled meal several times a week.
Visit Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and California and tell me we don't do SPICE!!!!!!!!

I'm from Texas and I love spicy food! I grew up eating lots of hot and extra-hot meals. Foods from Asia are especially delicious. I think it's just a matter of people being exposed to spiciness and getting used to it. It'll take some time, but the way it worked for me was exposure at a very young age.

You would be surprised at how many "Westerners" eat spicy food! I really like spicy food, it is a matter of taste. I have many friends that like the spicy foods as well, mainly people in the western US. I have a favorite "Vietnamese" place I like to eat at, when they see me come in they really turn up the spice for me!

They've been eating it for ever. I don't because I don't like spicy food. I like to be able to taste the different things I am eating without having a fire in my mouth.
Remember that hot spicy food has first been used to hide the taste and smell of rotten food.

i'm from the east and i am not into spicy food. i rarely eat it. i think it is a matter of life style. it completely not a sign of racism or anything. it is just purely preference.
FYI in the old times, asian dishes in south korea (who is into spicy food) are not spicy.

We are surrounded by spicy food but it's not a part of most of our daily living. I love Indian, Thai, Vietnamese but sometimes you just want tea and toast, roast beef and potatoes, and pasta!
