If they were done away with, why did Jesus do them?

Jesus did not start a new religion, He came in accordance to Judaism. Its just that many of the Jews did not accept Gods plan. People were looking for a earthly kingdom, not a heavenly kingdom within us. So many Jews reject Gods ways and many Gentiles now believe.

So it is not a new religion, just a new name.

Obviously you don't know what Christianity is. Jesus didn't say, "I am teaching you Christianity". Jesus is known as Christ (Messiah aka "Anointed one")

Followers of Jesus Christ are known as Christians. Christianity under the teachings of Jesus is basically a "Refinement" of Judaism. The Old Testament (old agreement - old will) was finished with Jesus death on the cross. The New Testament took effect in his resurrection (new will - new agreement) did not destroy the law of the former but refined it.., or perhaps fine tuned it may be more apt.

For example - the rituals and ceremonial parts of the Mosaic laws were done away with, BUT the spirit of the law remains in effect. The 10 commandments are the base laws, the others are used in gaging what sin is. The old Law identifying sin remains in tact.

Salvation through Jesus, the sacrificial Lamb (by proxy if you will) is freedom from the sins - not meaning we are free to sin, but the law is written in our hearts not to sin without having to go through the ceremonial and rituals. One covering for sins - no more animal sacrifices.

The life of Jesus, and everything He said are what constitute Christianity, as Christianity means 'like Christ'. Christianity is a spiritual walk in love and truth like Christ.
