Gumshoe, private eye, gum-heel, hawkshaw, peeper, shamus, sleuth, snooper, private dick, etc.

P. I.'s, or private eyes. Oh, and short for detective, dick.
For example, Dick Tracy. He was a private investigator, wasn't he? (Or, am I dating myself?)
