from the turn of the century (lasts) 1900's it would be copper. due to the fact they used to wear copper buttons on their uniform. Also the long arm of the law which really comes from the bible as the lord is the long arm of his faithful always holding them back from more than they can handle

I'm surprised people haven't mentioned "5-0," which comes from the old TV show "Hawaii 5-0."
"Gumshoe" is a term that comes from either the sole of the shoe, made from rubber and therefore quieter, allowing the cop to sneak up on the bad guys more easily, or the fact that a cop on the beat or a detective does a lot of walking and sooner or later will step into the gum some slob dropped on the sidewalk.
