That's a complicated question.
Yes, I think that most dead folks are unconscious. "Asleep", I believe, is the Biblical term, and somewhere, God mentions that the dead know nothing.
Then, again, Jesus does say to the thief on the cross, "Today you will be with Me in Paradise." Oh, what alot of debate He sparked there, especially since there is no punctuation in the Greek language. Could He really have meant that the thief was going to be in Paradise that very same day? Or was He just saying "Today, I am saying to you".
My opinion, which, I suppose, is as good as anyone else's, is this: Hey, Jesus was hanging on a cross, dying. He was fighting for breath. Someone in that situation doesn't waste words. So, I'm thinking, yes, He meant that the thief would be in Paradise with Him that very day.
Then, too, there are those dead people who came up out of their graves when Jesus died, and who "were seen of many". They don't seem to be anywhere around, at least, I've not heard of any...so, I'm guessing that they, too, are in Paradise with Him. They would be the ones who slept, until Jesus came down into the grave and woke them up...and took them with Him when He went back to His Father..."leading captivity captive".
Those who die trusting in Him, I believe, go to be with Him when they die. The rest just sort of wait...

unconscious means:
1) Lacking awareness and the capacity for sensory perception; not conscious.
2) Temporarily lacking consciousness.
3) Occurring in the absence of conscious awareness or thought: unconscious resentment; unconscious fears.
1) the dead do no have capacity for sensory perception
2) they are PERMANENTLY lacking consciousness
3) they have absence of thoughts.
hope this helps.

Eccl.9:5 -"For the living are conscious that they will die,but as for the dead they are conscious of nothing at all"
The Bible likens death to a deep sleep. The dead go back to the ground from which they came and remain in God's memory until their resurrection.(Acts.25:15;John 5:28)

Luke 16:19-31 is possibly the only glimpse we have into the realm of the dead, but it may merely be a parable. I don't know.
