All the crap you've ever heard about beatings or feeding the dog gunpowder to make him mean are bogus, abusive crap. To make a dog more confident, expose him to lots of new people and situations. Then he'll be able to tell a threat from a situation that is not serious. Some breeds are naturally tougher, while others will never be aggressive no matter what you do. German Shepherds are natural watchdogs - just hearing a big dog bark will send a burglar to another house.
If you teach your dog to bite, you will have a huge liability problem - you and your family can be sued or even go to jail if your dog injures someone. Your homeowner's insurance policy may refuse to cover you if you have a dangerous dog. Most dogs never get to bite someone breaking into your house or attacking you - they bite your friends or visitors. How would you feel if your dog mauled someone's child? Almost 80% of fatal dog attacks are on children under 12 - not on burglars!!
If you really need protection that bad, get a gun - at least it doesn't have a mind of its own.

you don't have to teach them, they will do it.german sheperds were used for herding sheeps and to protect it from predators.so it is in its instincts to protect.it is also very territorial. at the sight of a stranger or a burglara the german sheperd will bark to let its owner know and most likely it will hold the person till the owner arrives.if the stranger tries to escape it will attack.
a germansheperd is confident and courageous it will defend his family or what is dear to him to his death.any cowardice seen in an individual german sheperd is probably the result of poor breeding.

I figure for the most part, they will chase any strangers, or at least bark at them like crazy. The only other thing you can do is take them to a training school, but that will cost some bucks!

Think about this - do you really want to teach this? there is no way the dog can tell a burgler from Aunt Mary.

I'm not a dog trainer, so I'm not too sure. But hopefully you're better at training dogs than you are at spelling.
