All dogs are "pedigreed". A pedigree just tells who the parents and grandparents and so forth are. All dogs came from other dogs. Sometimes you don't know who those dog were, but they still came from somewhere!!! Just because the dog has a pedigree, doesn't mean it is any good either!! Puppy mills puppies have pedigrees. All the dogs listed in the pedigree can be crap. And if you are looking for a cheap dog, that is what youa re going to get....crap.

Don't go by price alone. Some dog breeders will sell you dogs with problems cheaply and then it's not so cheap...especially when you end up having to put the dog down because it has a lot of medical problems. Talk to people that have bought from a particular breeder before to see if they had any problems. Really reputation is the only way to find a good breeder. I'm just saying be careful...just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's a problem dog...but it doesn't mean it isn't either...and just because it's expensive doesn't mean you won't have problems. I have a friend who bought a dog from a breeder because it was more affordable and they now have a dog they love with bad hip problems that will probably not live beyond half of it's normal life.

Why do you want a pedigree lab at a "cheap price"? Short answer is you can't.

If you want a pedigree lab it should be for two reasons - one because you want to show it or continue to breed pedigree labs; or two because you want to be assured that it has been bred well and has a reduced risk of genetic disorders and a high probability of having a good temperament and of exhibiting "typical" lab physique and qualities.

Reputable breeders charge what they do for their pups because it costs a lot of money to breed a purebred dog. It is not pure profiteering.

Puppy farmers and backyard breeders might purport to sell you a genuine lab at a reduced price, but be very wary of this.

The other thing you should bear in mind is that the initial purchase cost of a lab is a tiny percentage of what you should expect to pay over the life of the dog. In the initial few months you will outlay a lot of money.

Please think long and hard about whether you can afford to look after a labrador or any other kind of dog BEFORE you take the plunge.

You can get a registered, champion lab, from quite a few show breeders, at a greatly reduced, or even FREE price, if you are able to provide a good home.

Good breeders usually have show animals that have been spayed or neutered after their show career is over, and they are not needed to breed and carry on the line.

If you have a large fenced yard, and you are home most of the day, you are a good candidate for a potential home.

A good breeder WILL do a home and reference check, as well as contact your vet and ask if you provide good care to your animals.

If you do not have a business relationship with a local vet, now is the time to develop one.

Use the breeder link on the AKC site to locate lab breeders in your area. Call several and explain that you would like to offer a good home to one of their retired champions.

Enjoy your new, healthy, registered, pedigreed, champion pet!

In Australia, breeders often sell pedigreed dogs who are not good enough to win prizes in shows for a lower price. Sometime they insist the dog is spayed or nuetered. This can some times halve the price.
