I'm not sure how common it is, but it does happen. It was like that for me a few years ago when I was on certain medications. I had no problem getting an erection, but could not "finish" for several hours. My girlfriend thought I was the greatest thing since the wheel, lol.
It could be stress, or meds, sensitivity. Many reasons actually. If it's a real concern, have him see his doc.

I wouldn't say it is common, but it's certainly possible.
Could be that he couldn't reach ejaculation because he was not turned on enough, had already orgasmed / masturbated earlier that day.
Could be nerves / drugs / alcohol.
If he was wearing a condom, he may not have had enough stimulation to ejaculate.
Like women, I think if men go too long in postponing orgasm they can get to the point where they cannot achieve it. I'd suspect this was the case.

Its a disease but prostitutes are offering free sex for this type of men. My friend still have a same problem at the age of 55 and girls like him too much. He discharges after 04 hours..... Happens to me all the time if I've had too many rum and cokes. Hard as a rock and loving every minute of it, but no fireworks till morning after waking up. Then it's wonderful.

I am able to do the same but it took years to learn the control.
If its a problem for you ask him what turns him on. My girlfriend knows how to push my buttons so when she don't want to go for hours she will do her thing on me.
