you from the UK? got info the other day from a company called Nationwide Credit consultants tel:0870 787 1990, call is free. You pay them a fee and can have your history cleared of the last 6 years, and yes it is Legal too so try that. I will.

I am assuming youre in the US.
Get your credit reports.
www.annualcreditreport.com
theyre free. Look them over for errors and outdated information. Slowly start disputing items (online is a good way). Dont do too much at once. Just a few items at a time.
If there are debts on there that you do actually owe, make arrangements to pay them. Get the creditors to agree to remove the items upon payment, as getting collections or negative items updated as paid is still negative. Get them to agree in writing.
Once youve accomplished all this open a couple credit card accounts (first premier, orchard, capital one) and use them sparingly. Never exceed 35% of your limit. Always pay on time. Most important thing to improve your credit is time. Bad items can only stay on for 7 years, with few exceptions, and the good stays on indefinately.
Your credit is your life.

Do not go to Credit Consolidation. I saw a programme on Watchdog about people who had used these kinds of repair schemes and they ended up paying out more. You have to pay an initial fee to start off with - and if you dont have that money they suggested to people to pay the fee of a credit card - how is that helping the person? Pay you bills on time and if you have problems set up a payment scheme directly with the people you owe money too.

If you are in the UK you need to contact a company called
Equifax Plc
Credit File Advice Centre
PO Box 3001
Glasgow
G81 2DT and
send them a cheque (or postal order) for £2 and get a copy of your credit record. Then you can see who has recorded what about you and set about contacting those companies. Often there can be mistakes on there (my neighbours were listed as living in my house) which can go against you. Otherwise you can only pay back what you owe but you can see from your record how long it stays on file for, even just a late payment.
