Read carefully-
I am getting ready to take my final exam, one topic is Edward Said. One of his claims is that there is a bias (in the media) from the west aimed towards Islam and the Middle East, to further a cause. To a certain extent this may be true. BUT isn't it true that the Middle Eastern Media and Islam projects the same bias in their media aimed at the West and/or Christianity and Judaism? I think it is kind of like "the pot calling the kettle black" What do you think?

SexySam_4u: Interesting point...but my question was not about foreign policy or Bush or nuclear weapons. I know that the media can not control what "we" feel. It is just there trying to sway public opinion...no matter where you live: in the States or in the Middle East.

Joe in texas: Did I say that the two cultures where "morally equivalent"? I am talking about the media from the Middle East or the West and their perspective on each other.

Absolutely. Each region/country thinks that the other one's beliefs, morals, ethics, etc are completely wrong while insisting that they are right. Just about every war throughout history had some kind of "name calling," if you will, as a root to the violence.

well this is somethin which needs detailed insight and overlook,
life is complex so is the nature of humans, it is not what people say and what media says it is what we decide nad what we feel about it, it is true that media in west protrays the image on ISlam in adifferent way and then they get the same result when they see thier image in gulf media,
what is this all this is eye for eye and tooth for tooth rule, nothing else, but who started this, why this is happenning, beacause we are peeping into the matters of others, what is our business in UAE; Saudi Arabia, Afganistan, Iran.
USA has more stock piles of nuclear weapons than any country then why is he asking Iran not to make use of nuclear energy, world can not be judged by the wimsical approcah of a fool,
same is the case of Middle eastern countries, so judge who si wrong and why is he saying so, why to justify the wrong doing,
USA has always been at wars and it is its policy to interfere into matters of other like china, vietnam, canada, cuba and many more to say,......
why is he doin it and I have started to believe..without USA world would be a better place to live alteast...

It seems there are a lot of confused people on here. They think that both sides think they are right and the other is wrong and there is really no moral difference between them.

Well wake up kids! There really is good and evil in the world.

Compare western society and a Afghanistan under the Talaban for instance.

Let's se if anything seems wrong to you.

Stoning women in the streets for exposing their face.
Making television illegal.
Outlawing music.
Beheading women who have sex before marraige.
Allowing fathers to kill daughters who refuse an arranged marriage.
Cutting the clitoris off girls so they will never enjoy sex.

Or how about Pakistan:
Giving the death penalty to a man because he is Christian.

Or Saudi Arabia:
Making it illegal for women to drive.
Or how about this one... sitting back and watching little girls burn to death because it is improper for Male firemen to enter a girls school.

So tell me now... are both cultures morally equivalent.

What do you say Ladies? Want to give up all your rights?

As to your question, a bit over my head, sorry. I do know that our news is censored by Government and Conservative bias. I only listen to PBS and the BBC for the real truth in news.
I gave up Radio, TV and print news about 8 years ago.
