no. the server could be busy with other customers. The cashier should be the one watching people leaving the restaurant to make sure they pay but at a good restaurant the manager should be visable to the customers if they have complaints on the server so he can handle the situation and make a decision to let the customer have the meal free due to bad service. Then he can deal with the server

I wouldn't have thought so morally. Most businesses have some kind of insurance that protects them from this. For instance if you went to a shop and stole something, each business has a 'loss' insurance, and they allow a certain percentage of stock to be 'written off'. they certainly don't expect each staff member to have a reduction in wages because of it.

However, if it was written in their contract that they have to ensure payments from all customers or it will be taken from theirs, then that could be a different matter and the chances are, that the waiter/waitress would have to pay at least a percentage of the bill.

Depends on the owner, most likely though. I've heard owners/bosses that even take broken dishes out of servers paychecks.

Where was the manager when they walked out? Employees are not legally responsible for walkouts. Switch jobs asap!!!!
The front desk clerk is not required to pay for walkouts either!THEFT OF SERVICES report needs to be filed with the local police.

If the waiter was the direct reason of why they left (i.e. I dare not take your order in case I drown by the amount of saliva you spit out, sir), then I'd say yes.

well yes, if it's in their contract they pay for not defending the restaruant from theft. If it's not in there, then the server has no obligation to pay for the theft
