In the distant past I have hitchhiked in Alaska, Colorado, Wyoming, etc.
But nowadays, would I pick one up? That would depend on so many factors.
When I lived in Alaska, it was an unwritten law to pick up hitch hikers, because usually they were stranded, lost, or had vehicle problems...and when it's 40 degrees below zero, or you're on the only road and the nearest city is 300 miles away...you pick them.
It's a little different when you're in civilization. And you get that "uh-oh...could be a mass murderer I'm stopping for..." feeling. I have picked up hitchhikers in the past and had no problems...but it depends on the "vibe" I get when I look at them. And so far the "vibe" hasn't been wrong. But still, these days I hesitate and hardly ever do it.

I hitched a lot in the 60's, 70's, only one weird episode with a drunk driver, we finally asked him to let us out. I pick up an occasional female hitchiker (I am female too). When I go to Kauai I pick them up if the vibe feels ok. It is a small island and not too much murder goes on there. It is a good way to get good local stories, and learn of things to do. But generally speaking, on the mainland, I don't do it anymore unless it is an obvious stranded motorist, or a female that I recognize.

unwashed homeless looking type NOPE (just because I don't want stains or bad BO permeating my car). But a brokedown motorist or good looking chick will always get a ride if I have room. For the good looking chick I will make room LOL :)
I once hitched from Buffalo NY to Cape Cod so I appreciate each and every one of you good folks that helped chariot me along. Thanks all

Even though it is risky, I try to judge the situation. I avoid people with backpacks/luggage/animals, but would stop for someone near a car that was broken down.
Thank you to the group of hunters in Colorado that stopped for me one freezing cold December night while my wife and kids were back in the car.

Depends on the place and time. If it's a friendly barrio, i will. If it's in the city at night, i won't. If it's in the city in the morning, i might. There is no clear-cut rule for this.
Weigh goodness and practicality and safety and assess altogether quickly.

Definately not. Not having a 5 year old son in the car to think of. My ex use to do it all the time and I hated it...I never felt safe

I didn't until I needed a ride myself one day. Every since then (if I trust my instincts well enough), I pay it foward.
