Desalination means to remove salt from water, is about the same as distillation. However distillation involves getting pure water out of impurites, not just salt.

A desalination plant is a factory that removes salt from seawater to make freshwater. If a country doesn't hv enough water, desalination plants provide another resource (potable water) for their people. That would probably save them money (in the long run) from buying water from other countries and also gives them a safeguard in case the other countries dont want to sell them water.

We have NEwater in singapore, water from desalination plant. Actually the water is renewed water from the sewers.

Hope this helps. :)
