if the offspring were larger than the adult then the offspring would have to shrink as it developes in order to give birth to offspring smaller than itself.

No, there are no animals that do that.
However there are are a few protists that are larger at birth than either parent.

I'm not sure about that, but I have heard of an insect which dies as soon as it's given birth, it could me the mayfly.
