Clouds are made up of tiny water droplets or ice crystals, usually a mixture of both. The water and ice scatter all light, making clouds appear white. If the clouds get thick enough or high enough all the light above does not make it through, hence the gray or dark look. Also, if there are lots of other clouds around, their shadow can add to the gray or multicolored gray appearance.

clouds are masive amounts of water vapor comprest together. when it rains the vapor from the clouds is acually turning back into water and falling to the ground. the reason the clouds are gray soon before rain comes is because of the thickness of the vapor. this process of vapor rise and fall is always repeated.

Due to the raindrops forming in the cloud (and prior to rainfall they are being help in the cloud by the updraft), the cloud becomes very dense. Less sunlight can make it through the dense cloud and to our eyes because the raindrops and cloud droplets are scattering and absorbing the light.
