I have tried and tried to sleep. I can't get more than about 3 hours a night. The baby sleeps through the night just fine, she is great. I won't take sleeping pills because of the baby. I am afraid that will put me out and she may cry during the night and I don't want to chance it.. Any advice? I tried a hot bath, warm milk, reading a boring book, and stepping out to get some fresh air.

Any strenuous activity right before attempting to sleep will hamper that. Sleep is based on heartrate. I'm a caffeine addict, but I've found that caffeine can be flushed out of the system by drinking water, unlike alcohol. As well, if you place the bed in a room you are never in throughout the day, this makes it a more peaceful environment...Oh, and the room should be temperate.

You got some good advice out there, skip the warm milk and have a glass of orange juice a couple hours before bedtime. have some fish for dinner. Excercise during the day some.

I know this sounds terrible - what about putting the baby in bed with you? It sounds like you are paranoid about something happening. How old is the baby? It wouldn't be too terrible in the first year......

Have you ever tried drinking a cup of tea before bedtime? I found this tea called "sleepytime tea" and it worked really well. Good luck!

either reduce your stress
or
alter your eating pattern
particularly, avoid eating heavy food late at night.
I think a hearty breakfast might be the answer, and perhaps nap in the afternoon.
