We all know that Wal*Mart is dubbed as being "evil" by many people out there because of the disturbing mistreatment of outsourced employees around the world. Wal*Mart is notorious for outsourcing jobs all the way to China, Ecuador, and etc. (all being third-world countries with high poverty rates). Wal*Mart hires people there to work for incredibly low wages (usu. US$1.00 per article of clothing made, up to hourly wages of usu. US$1.00 - $4.50.). This disturbing trend has many concerned of not only the mistreatment of the hired employees due to poor working conditions and under-the-table wages, but of the potential (and execution) of extreme global monopolization.

I know about Wal*Mart and its "evil" thirst for power and money... but I've also heard about other retailers... from Target to JC Penney. I'm looking for a list of "evil" retailers (with sources, preferrably) and the behaviors they initiated which characterized such names attributed to them. Can anyone help me? Thanks. :-)

By the way, the reason this question was posted under "Other Society and Culture" was because I felt it would be inappropriate to post it under "Economics" or "Business and Finance" because I feel both of those topics don't cover the possibility of "evil" when it comes to corporate monopolization. The mistreatment of workers in many retailers is mainly a concern of the people in the world (the consumers or citizens). The money is the main concern of the retailer. The latter two topics would have been inappropriate to attribute to this question because I wish to know of the "evil" associated with them... not the economical perspective within. Thank you, all. :-)

For those who forgot the question: I want to know which American retailers are called "evil" by people because they treat workers (usually outsourced) badly... kinda like Wal*Mart, etc. Thanks. :-)

Look up adbusters and ethical consumer.

Big global corps who outsource for cheapest work regardles of environmental or social standards are obvious targets.

Ones who sell products detrimental to health or the environment.
eg advertising fast food or alcohol to youngsters. Gambling...

or the car companies, see the new film out end of june "who killed the electric car".

And even the corner shop who refuses to serve certain groups of people, eg if they wear turbans, is "evil

But it is not these companies that are "evil"; companies are obliged by law to maximise the return for investors; but it is the managers who don't challange a culture created by customers and elected bodies of persuing unsustainable industrial growth.
It is because of public support and demand that these companies thrive. To change this needs a lot of education and a more honest media.

So if I have to lable any business "evil" it will be the opinion formers, advertisers, churches, Fox "news", party political machines etc

Burger King. I used to work for them. They would pull one or two guys out of each store in the district and make them do mulching and outside maintenance for two or three weeks. We only got an extra dollar on the hour. We had to be at the meeting place at 6 AM, work eight to ten hours a day and all for under $8/hr. Im not the only one who feels this way about BK. There is an 'Anti Burger King' site on the Web.

Because taking advantage of those who are doing work for you is a moral issue.
If you treat them so bad they cannot afford medical insurance, and don't provide a pension, while you drive a mercedes -- that would be evil.
We're here on this earth to look out for each other, not take advantage of others.

Any of the sweat shops. Nike comes to mind. I hate the way they pay millions to sports stars like Michael Jordan, while paying slave wages to employees who live in poverty in 3rd world countries. I refuse to buy products from Nike, and any other company that I know does that. Slavery makes my stomach.

walmart, did you realize that they are the #1 employer in the u.s.,if they are so evil, why is it that they also give back to the community's that they are in,charities, scholarships. the people that work there aren't forced to stay, and have the ability to advance. you want to search out evil, start with the public schools and the teachers that push an agenda out side their curriculum of study.they push politics in elementary math classes and if chastised, they fail the students
